Our Guest Speaker: Karen Clark

Karen Clark (KC) has worked with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission since 2005. She was Program Coordinator then Director of the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education in Corolla, NC for fifteen years.  In 2021, KC took a new position in the agency’s Wildlife Diversity program, supporting community science efforts up and down the coast. Her primary area of expertise has been sea turtles and marine mammals but she has enjoyed expanding her experiences with the diverse programs that the agency is involved in. KC lives in Duck, NC with her husband, two sons, and their dog - Toby Wan Kanobi.

Going Wild with Community Science

NC Wildlife Resources Commission conducts several projects which rely on public volunteers to contribute to monitoring and conservation efforts. Coastal Community Science Biologist Karen Clark will present some of the Agency’s active volunteer projects along the coast. From bats to birds, sea turtles to frogs, KC will present a community science sampler, answer questions, and probably even ask a few along the way.

Questions She will address:

  1. Did you know that there are 31 species of frogs and toads in NC and they each make distinct calls?
  2. Did you know that diamond back terrapins are the only truly estuarine turtle species?
  3. Did you know the dredge spoil islands in Oregon Inlet provide essential breeding and nesting habitat for at risk waterbird species?
  4. Did you hear the one about the leatherback in the Outer Banks?
  5. Do you what year was the highest sea turtle nesting year for the northern Outer Banks?
